This area represents India’s Tran Himalaya region due to its cold desert environment and harsh climatic conditions in winters. The ecosystem has suffered a lot due to harsh weather conditions and thus many wildlife animals migrate to lower regions in winters.
The Changthang region is home to more than 3500 Tibetan refugees who primarily depends upon livestock for their food.
It is situated at an altitude of 14,600 meters above sea level in Rushpo Valley. The land is home to the Changpa nomads and stretches from Eastern Ladakh to approximately 1600 kilometers east into Tibet. The climate of Changthang is quite unpredictable and can result in thunderstorms at times.
Alike other destinations, June to September is the best time to explore the Changthang region as after that there is a huge possibility of snow cover.
Attractions in Ladakh constitute of high altitude lakes and wildlife treasure troves. The southeastern part of Ladakh abounds with highland plateaus such as Changthang, Rushpu and Korzok areas. The region is home of the Changpa tribe, a nomadic and pastoral community. It is quite popular for its scenic beauty, lakes and wildlife. The three prominent lakes of this region are Pangong, Tsomoriri, Tsokar and Statspuk Tso. In the Changthang region, you will find wildlife in abundance. The main attractions are snow leopard and Kyang, the Tibetan wild ass. Some rare and exotic birds found in this region include Tibetan cranes, Black necked cranes and Bar headed goose.

State buses and deluxe private buses run from both Manali and Srinagar to Leh. From there onwards, you can continue through trekking and jeep safari.
