Suru Valley Travel Guide

One of the most awe-inspiring destinations in the Ladakh, the Suru Valley forms the foundation of Kargil district. It is nestled in the northeastern foothills of the Great Himalayas, at a height of 3000 meters above sea level. Tourists in large number throng the place to spend their vacation amidst tranquil and picturesque natural beauty.

The total composite population of this region is 30,000 and comprises mainly of Tibetan and Dared descendants. The lower part of the valley, i.e., below 3000 meters, is one of the most agricultural prolific parts of Ladakh. Every year two crops are harvested in this region. These crops are watered by the overspill from the melting snow glaciers.

Location

Located in the far west of Ladakh, in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, Suru Valley is situated at an elevation of 3000 meters. The valley expands itself from the Kargil town up to the Penzi La glacier, from where the Suru River originates.

Tourist Attractions of Suru Valley

Sankoo

Encompassed by the rocky mountains, this bowl shaped stretch is a must visit destination in Ladakh. It is a popular picnic spot for the tourists. Here you can explore the lush plantations, wild roses and nearby villages.

Rangdum

One of the most isolated parts of this Valley, Rangdum is an oblique extended plateau. The place is encompassed by the magnificent hills on one side and rocky mountains on the other. It is just a six hour drive from the Kargil and nestled at an altitude of 3657 meters. The 18th century Buddhist monastery ‘Rangdum’ is a major attraction and home to around 40 monks.

Kartse Khar

Home to the 7ft tall rock statue of Lord Buddha, Kartse Khar is an ancient Buddhist village in the Valley. The town dates back to the 7th century.

Panikhar

Located in the central part of the valley, Panikhar offers immense opportunities for the mountaineering and sightseeing.

Where to Stay

In terms of accommodation, the Suru Valley has camps and tents near the Rangdum monastery. However, in Kargil, you will find budget and medium-range hotels but in limited numbers.

Best Time to Visit

Summers in the Valley are quite long and gives ample chances to the tourists to explore this charismatic valley. The best time to visit Suru Valley in Ladakh is between the months of July and September.

How to Reach

There are regular bus services which connect Sankoo, Parachik and Panikhar to Kargil. A bus ride from Kargil to Sankoo, Parachik and Panikhar takes 2, 3 and 4 hours respectively. Rangdum and Padum are connected to each other with a bi-weekly bus service. However, some trucks plying between Kargil and Padum offer a lift in the cabin at the price of a bus ticket.
