History & Culture
Ladakh’s culture, economy, and society have been shaped by many factors. One is that Ladakh neighbors Tibet in the east, whereas the north has the Xinjiang province of China. The northwest is bounded by Pakistan, the west by Kashmir, and the south by the Lahaul and Spiti valleys of Himachal Pradesh. Another is that Central Asia is further afield. All these areas have been influenced and shaped by the culture and tradition of Ladakh, which has developed over the years to the present day. For instance, the Tibetan influence can be seen in the region’s Buddhist monasteries, while the Central Asian influence is evident in the local cuisine and traditional attire.
Along the long-established trade routes through Tibet, Central Asia, Kashmir, and northern India’s plains came goods and ideas. Despite its harsh terrain and remoteness from urban centers, Ladakh has long been where people, commerce, and cultures intermingled. The art and culture of Ladakh, therefore, reflect influences from many other places. Records and monographs left by European travelers – the first Europeans to reach Leh in 1631 were the Portuguese priests Francisco de Azevedo and John de Oliveira. Then, the history of Ladakh states that in 1820, two Englishmen, William Moorcroft and George Trebeck, who worked for the East India Company, had come to Ladakh. On a journey to central Asia in search of horses for the East India Co., they were kept in Leh for two years, waiting for permission to go to Yarkand, which they eventually denied. During this two-year wait, they observed and wrote about life in Ladakh, trade, clothes, religion, etc. It’s worth noting that Ladakh’s climate is characterized by cold winters and mild summers, and its terrain is rugged and mountainous, making it a unique and challenging destination for travelers.
